Who took that? When researching for Hospital Radio, we often stumble across some really amazing images, taken for the musical artist's promotional portfolio. One photographers work kept popping up and we felt compelled to get in touch, so it gives us the great pleasure to present the work of Tim Schnetgöeke from Berlin.
In his own words…
Tim Schnetgöeke is a professional photographer and amateur record collector based in Berlin, Germany. If pressed, he'd call his style of photography 'staged realism.' Most of his music has been related to music in one way or another and he has shot portraits of influential artists across a variety of genres, his photos have been published in books, magazines and on record covers.
Tenor Fly (Above)
I thought that people were joking when I heard of this guy's death last year. I still listen to his music all the time. He may not sound very approachable on his records but when I met him he was a genuinely nice person who was full of jokes.
Gladdy Wax
DJ Andy Smith introduced me to Gladdy Wax when I went to Notting Hill Carnival for the first time and I have returned to listen to him play almost every year since. Anybody who knows me knows that I like music. I also get bored of too much of the same music quickly. That's why I really rate Andy and for the same reason I rate Gladdy. Who else will play music ranging from Louis Jordan to Chronixx at Carnival? Gladdy and his crew always make me feel very welcome at Carnival and I am thankful for that.
Jon
I took this snap when Gladdy Wax was playing at the Victoria & Albert museum as a part of the London International Ska Festival. Jon stood out by the way he dressed and he was obviously enjoying the music.
Smoove & Turrell
I have Smoove known for over a decade, John Turrell for almost as long. Even if I didn't like their music, I'd be happy to know them. I took this snap in London when they were supporting Cymande (who are another personal favourite). This is an awesome band which deserves all the success in the world.
Stig of the Dump
"Art over money - Love over everything" - These are good words to live by. I'd still call this a portrait even though there's no face in the picture. I first saw Stig at an underground hip hop show which was one of the worst shows I've been to. Lots of serious dudes rapping about serious things with closed eyes and no chorus. Then Stig went on stage, made fun of the audience and himself and saved the night.
