This month’s guest DJ mix comes from Smoove of Smoove and Turrell fame. Smoove however, initially started off as part of the band the Ashbrooke All Stars, who’s hit “Dubbin’ Up The Pieces” charted in 1991. Itself an early edit/mashup of the Average White Band and Steeleye Span, a genre blend that would serve Smoove well in future endeavors.
Following a DJ/presenter stint on Northern East radio station WEAR FM, and another band Rubberneck, Smoove began releasing records under his own name, signing a deal with the seminal label Acid Jazz , releasing two albums and setting up his own labels Wack and Wass Records, returning to the mashup/bootleg theme started with the Ashbrooke All Stars.
Now, signed to Jalapeno Records with the “Northern Funk” Smoove And Turrell outfit, Smoove continues to be active as a DJ, producer and remixer and can be found on the 45 Live roster, entertaining all over the world with bags of seven-inch vinyl.
The band, now on to it’s fourth studio album “Crown Posada”, (released on October 14th 2016) are becoming a UK force to be reckoned with, blowing audiences away at concerts, including festivals such as Glastonbury and now receiving BBC Radio airplay.
So with the album imminent and a string of upcoming gigs, our resident DJ and music editor Flint & Steel caught up with Smoove to discuss the album, the band, solo career and generally have a laugh, which you can hear here along with highlights from the new album itself.
For more information on Smoove, gigs, releases and mixes check out his Soundcloud, Mixcloud, Facebook and the Smoove & Turrell website, as well as keeping your ears open on 45Live.
