Allowing art and music to collide, always seems to throw up a great result. The two artistic forms go hand in hand. We found it when we hosted our live paint event in 2014 and have continued this theory with our Mixcloud page. Allowing our friends and creatives the space to bring you audio and visual therapy.
We delved beyond the crates, clambered over the piles of audio files and dug deep into the lives of our artists. After much searching and sifting through photos and video files, we discovered that many of the artists who had submitted stickers were either connected to the music scene or were equally comfortable behind a mixing console, skilled at creating music, mixing tracks with precision in the same way they control a pen, brush or can. Obviously this excites us, because we have a great passion for both art-forms and have always envisaged putting the two together, side by side within the project, but not realising how far we could take it.
The first attempt at fusing visual art with music was when we invited Cone from The Weird crew to send us a mix. His eclectic and well structured mix soon became the soundtrack on my walk to work and also became a popular listen with our followers on Mixcloud. If you've ever tried mixing two records together, you'll realise it isn't easy, having an inbuilt sense of rhythm and a good ear is key. In a similar way the ability of being able to control a spray can requires an immense amount of skill and practise. Being able to create a mix of music with seamless precision and construct it in such a way that the flow captures the listener, elevating their levels of consciousness and manipulating their senses is no easy task. Again like creating a piece of art that pulls the viewer in, leaves them wondering how the artist was able to put their vision onto a canvas or wall.
Now comes the turn of Blueshift, DJ/Producer from Porto in northwest Portugal. A key member of the urban art collective 'Colectivo Rua' who we featured recently. Painting under the name Fedor, his character pieces and hi-octane wild letterforms really stand out, alongside his great colour selections. This hi-octane element of his artwork is present in his musical selection. With a change of pace this time round for our guest DJ mix he delivers a brilliantly constructed Liquid Drum & Bass session. Blueshift has been Dj'ing under the alias Blast for 7 years, in the harder Drum & Bass scene, as part of Portuguese label Yellow Stripe Recordings. With an ability to change the pace he has been able to create under the name Blueshift, representing for the Counter Point label and releasing a sampler Ep 'Melt' through the Porto based label. His skills on multiple deck mixing has earned him a great reputation in his country, allowing him to become a regular name on the event flyer. He has played on the bill of many events, with headliners such as Andy C, Friction, Noisia and DBridge, to name a few. This set has been recorded using a three deck mix setup with no cuts, edits, or pre-pitching. We hope you enjoy it, please feel free to leave any feedback.
