We are now 8 mixes into the Hospital Radio project. It gives us great pleasure to introduce a great all in one package of visual artist and DJ. It comes in the form of Cone from The Weird Crew aka Count Coney.
Cone is a German urban artist best known for being a part of a street art group of friends that are featured heavily within the project called The Weird.
He was born in Munich, Germany. He graduated Communications Design at Saarbrücken and right after it, he started to teach at the Hochschule der Bildenden Künste Saar. Colin founded the interdisciplinary operating studio named Bureau Stabil, together with five other designers in 2010, based in a top secret location in the heart of Saarbrücken. Together, they work on designing packaging, branding, identities, web concepts, illustration, book design, editorials and type design.
However, this artist and designer never forgot his roots so he, somehow, always comes back to the street art. From 2006 he just paints but the street style is all over his artworks. Cone’s style and topics have been changing more than a few times, from his figure-like images in the form of black and white ink drawings he got to most detailed, vivid designs.
Drawing his inspiration from lots of sources, it can come from some picture book he saw or some random illustration he bumped into. Anything that can arouse his attention to create a story behind the drawing is good enough to get him started. Since 2011, Cone is a member of the Vienna based crew called The Weird, together with Dxtr, Frau Isa, Herr Von Bias, Low Bros, Nychos, Look, Vidam and Rookie. This is a crew of artists that comes from a graffiti background and they are working together successfully – international and interdisciplinary.
Cone The Weird held his first solo exhibition titled ICONES—Number 1 at Rabbit Eye Movement, founded by his fellow artist and illustrator Nychos in 2005.
Cone the DJ
Count Coney, the Dj alter ego of Cone The Weird, a passionate artist, muralist, designer and illustrator, record collector for about 20 years and always digging deeper for some fresh timeless music that has soul, depth and gives inspiration. Coney Island is part of a monthly regular club night called Hipster at the Modul club in Saarbrücken. The residents DJs Ben Hoëk (Dj Sniper) and Count Coney have been collecting records for more than two decades. Musically open minded they are playing a fusion of various genres. Keeping a funk and soul base in their sets, they play all kinds of hip hop beat orientated music, roots and oddities, organic grooves, electronic freestyle, bass music and whatever feels like having soul. Playing all time classics, sampled rare grooves and breaks from back in the day is as important to them as looking out for new stuff. No boarders, just open minds. Playing vinyl records is a must. Nevertheless more and more digital music (often lacking a physical release yet) is played due to the changes in the world of music. Every mix is strictly freestyle mixing and a journey through their collections.
